Turbocharged engines operate with higher efficiency by using energy in waste gas to drive a turbine, which rotates a compressor attached to the driveshaft.

The compressor feeds highly pressurized air into the engine cylinder, producing a higher rate of fuel combustion compared with naturally aspirated engines, and far greater power output as a result.
